Rombauer Vineyards Innovation

The Rombauer philosophy hasn’t changed since our founding in 1980: We believe in doing everything in our power to produce the best wines possible.

With just three head winemakers in our 39-year history, we’ve achieved consistency of style — distinctive, fruit-driven wines — while continually refining and improving our winemaking practices. Richie Allen, our Director of Viticulture and Winemaking, embraces traditional and cutting-edge practices in the vineyard and cellar to make certain each wine gets the customized attention it needs.

This marriage of old and new begins with optical sorters, ensuring only the best fruit makes it into our wines. All lots are separated, no matter how small, allowing Richie to determine the best fermentation and aging option for each. For reserve red wines, barrel fermentation is used to produce a more textured palate and silky tannins, and up to 25 types of French oak barrels are used for fermentation and/or aging. For all wines, a basket press and peristaltic pumps — larger versions of those used to move blood during surgery — provide for gentle handling every step of the way. Our caves provide ideal conditions for aging red wines. -- [Source: Rombauer Vineyards website]

Winemaker Tasting Series: Carneros Pinot Noir

The Carneros Pinot Noir is the newest team member to Frank Family’s collection of Napa Valley wines, yet nonetheless deserving of a place in your cellar and in your glass. Carneros is the coolest region of the Napa Valley, featuring rolling knolls and morning fog from San Pablo Bay, making it the ideal climate for Pinot Noir. Aging these delicate grapes in French oak barrels gives this wine energy, delicacy, and length.

Mustard Season in Sonoma Valley

Springtime in Sonoma Valley means blue skies, white fluffy clouds and bright yellow fields of wild mustard flowers in the fields.

While it can be tempting to walk over to the nearest field of brilliant flowers and lay down, it's not advised to go running around on private property, and trampling over what is actually an important cover crop for vineyards might be detrimental to the farmer trying to take care of their soil.

To find out some good places to find mustard in Sonoma Valley, see our guide here:

Mumm Savoir-faire in the Cellar

Have you ever wanted to know more about what goes into making your favorite bottle of Mumm champagne? Winemaking requires the savoir-faire of an expert: the Cellar Master. Since January 2020 this esteemed position with Maison Mumm has been held by Laurent Fresnet. What role does the Cellar Master play in the winemaking process? His mission is to ensure the consistency and signature taste of Mumm champagnes, especially during three key moments: the harvest, production classification, and blending.
